Welcome to Murder She Knits, a blog where we craft a wardrobe inspired by Jessica Fletcher, the heroine of Murder She Wrote portrayed by the beloved Angela Lansbury.
How will we do this? One episode at a time – finding thrifted treasures, searching deep in our closets, and making some of her memorable pieces by hand.

Splurge or Save: Jessica’s Leather Saddle Bag
In the opening scene, we meet Jessica at home in Cabot Cove, Maine, where her mind for mysteries is already in action at a community theater rehearsal. While her outfit is understated, what caught my attention was that bag. It’s generously sized, caramel leather, and a classic saddle-bag style.
I found two options to start building our Jessica Fletcher inspired closet.
For those looking for a bag on a budget (and avoiding leather), this Amazon find is a fun choice:
For me, a classic piece like this one is worthy of a splurge. And when it comes to bags, I have a fondness for Dooney & Bourke. I scoured the internet and found this bag in great condition:
If you prefer to buy new, here’s a similar look that’s available online: Dooney & Bourke Florentine Satchel
Which leather saddle bag would you choose? The Splurge or Save?
Dressing Like Jessica: Classic Khaki and Blue
As Jessica’s first book becomes a hot seller, we see her bike past the bookshop and enjoy the thrill of seeing her own photo and books in the window.
To recreate this look, I chose:
- Loft chino pants. Here’s a similar pair: https://www.loft.com/clothing/pants/catl000014/606981.html?dwvar_606981_color=5948&pid=606981
- A vintage London Fog jacket that I thrifted.
- A simple blue scarf that’s been in my collection for years.
What did you think? How did I do with matching this look?
Jessica’s Wit and Wisdom:
Confronted with an unexpected costume party, Jessica delivers a memorable line that reminds us that while a proper lady, she remembers not to take herself too seriously:
In Search Of: Jessica’s Classic Trench Coat
In this episode, we see what will soon be a Jessica staple – a classic trench coat.
This is a piece I want to get just right so it’s going on my In Search Of Pinterest board.
I’ll be looking for the right color, style, fit, and good quality – hopefully thrifted!

I hope you enjoyed this first trip into the stylish world of Murder She Wrote and Jessica Fletcher. Stay tuned for Episode 2!
