Episode 3 of Murder She Wrote brings Jessica Fletcher back home in Cabot Cove, Maine.
We are introduced to her friend, Ethan Craig, and Cabot Cove’s endearing (if occasionally bumbling) sheriff, Amos Tupper.
Cabot Cove Style
When a hurricane blows in and brings a suspicious death with it, Jessica is of course called upon to help.
Her Cabot Cove style is more casual and pragmatic, as shown by her denim jacket. If this piece is your thing, I found many similar vintage finds on Poshmark!
Jessica’s Cabot Cove Cooking
Jessica serves her house guest “two plates of broiled scrod” which, I think, it must be acknowledged does not sound very appetizing. Scrod, it appears, is a young, firm fish such as haddock or cod.
A Google search doesn’t reveal many recipe options but here’s one from NewEngland.com.
I’m not sure I’m ready for scrod but I’ll be serving haddock and potatoes for dinner tonight in honor of this episode.
Jessica’s Style
As Jessica tracks down the true killer in this case, she wears layered look of a pinstriped shirt, wind breaker, and tied red sweater.
To recreate this look I focused on second-hand finds.
- A thrifted striped blouse (under $10!)
- A jacket borrowed from my husband’s closet
- And my favorite part of this look – a thrifted L.L. Bean sweater with toggle button detail that echos Jessica’s denim jacket from this episode.
Jessica’s Quotes
When a relative of the victim suggests that Jessica shouldn’t be investigating, she says:
The Fish Sweater
We can’t quite wrap up our time with Deadly Lady without talking about THE sweater.
I’ve seen suggestions that this sweater might have belonged to Jessica’s deceased husband, Frank. I love this idea and frankly (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun), wearing her husband’s fishing sweater seems exactly like what Jessica would do.
I know you might be thinking – isn’t this Murder She Knits? Shouldn’t you be knitting the fish sweater? Well yes, and I want to. But I can’t quite see myself actually wearing this sweater. My principal goal with this project is to curate a timeless wardrobe that I love wearing, so putting hours and hours into a sweater I don’t think I’ll wear doesn’t feel helpful.
But I’m open to reconsidering a way to make this sweater work! What do you think? How would you style this piece?
